The artistic and literary trope "Memento Mori" (translated from Latin "Remember You Must Die") has been around for ages, dating back to ancient Rome, though it was most notably popularized during the medieval-Victorian eras, c. the 1500s to 1800s.
A symbolic reminder that our earthly bodies, time and pursuits are limited -- so, really, a good way to check yourself when you get too caught up in drama, vanity, greed or hubris. Mourning jewelry, which carries similar motifs, also serves as a romantic gesture (albeit slightly dark) that even the inevitability of death cannot break our strongest bonds of love -- that which makes our earthly time truly worth living.
It is a haunting yet comforting motto...a reminder of the past, a nod to the future, and perhaps, a compass for the present.
The mold for this wonderful eternity design I've chosen to have cast as part of my Blazon collection was found deep in my jeweler's archive library. We don't know the original piece's exact origin, but this fantastic skull eternity band certainly has roots steeped in history with design influences ranging from Renaissance, Baroque, Georgian and even Victorian Memento Mori styling.
We wear ours as a reminder to always make the most of each and every day and to ensure our priorities in life are clear and focused. How will you wear yours?
